When someone asks me for the best way to get more exercise every day or what to eat in order to protect your health this is what they’re likely to hear. It’s true that there are plenty of simple techniques that can help to improve one’s quality of life. However, it is quite complex and difficult to stick with such a program when you have multiple things going at once and many other priorities to consider. This isn’t just the best way to lose weight and be healthy but also to create as much energy and focus as possible. In addition to looking like an astronaut here is what I’ve learned from using all these things to help you to live healthier and happier. This can be done by itself without any special equipment or fancy machines, only the basic tools to ensure you stay fit mentally and physically.
The thing about making changes to your diet is that you need to look after yourself first. When I make changes in my diet then only things get better. Even though changing your regular eating habits can be difficult if you don’t follow them regularly, changing your eating habits is so easy when you know exactly what to eat, when to stop eating something. A couple of examples would be if you decide to start having vegetable tea instead of hot chocolate and then go back to drinking coffee in the mornings which has sugary ingredients like sugar. I know this isn’t good for anyone, especially not to children, but changing your breakfast helps you save time. Another example would be swapping out the snacks that give you energy to sit down for long periods of time. You can always try to come up with alternatives for such things like fruit yoghurt instead of crisps, granola bars instead of chips etc. These are just two quick examples and you can find other ones too if you want to add more than one thing to your menu to make sure you are satisfied.
1. Eating right makes you feel good
By eating right our physical bodies do feel good, as well as our minds too. Eating fresh produce, such as vegetables and fruits make you feel refreshed and happy about yourself. The food you choose matters more than the amount of food to choose. Many people who choose processed foods and fast food are damaging their bodies and making themselves sick. Fresh and real meat make us feel confident and we are very good at controlling ourselves. They don’t have to be expensive either. Just choosing organic meats is cheaper and better for the planet and it is also better for your health. Organic produce is better for the environment because it doesn’t go to waste.
2. Eat more fresh vegetables and fruit
If you love the taste of fresh vegetables it makes it easier in some cases to get more vegetables into your meals. Fresh vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals and it takes less time and effort to cook them and they are generally fresher. Not all vegetables need refrigeration so make sure you think before you buy some and try to keep some fresh so that when you have them in a few weeks time you can still enjoy them too.
3. Don’t forget to drink lots of water
Water not only cools us down but we all have to deal with dehydration. Too much water doesn’t just mean that we are feeling thirsty. We often ignore it and think our systems are working fine the whole time and we are fine all of the time. But we actually need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Water is important for our body and for our immune system. Without enough water our body wouldn’t function properly. It also regulates the pH balance in our blood. So with each glass of water you should aim to fill up to about eight to 12 ounces depending on how much liquid you’re having.
Make sure you drink at least four cups of water a day because dehydration can lead to so many diseases and so many different illnesses. By being more hydrated you lower your chances of getting infected by some viruses, getting headaches and even making you tired. Your brain needs just about 8 liquid ounces per day so aim to drink between four to five cups every day. That’s a massive difference so start taking notice. Don’t neglect your gut too, because our digestive system can be affected by dehydration and not enough water can cause problems if your metabolism isn’t efficient enough.
4. Get enough sleep
Sleep deprivation isn't all bad. Our brains are very important in doing a lot of things including learning, communicating and thinking. Our ability to remember information and skills can get affected when we aren’t sleeping well. Sleep deprivation causes memory loss and cognitive decline. Lack of quality sleep means we are less able to learn and it can lead to poor decision-making when it comes to making decisions. Poor sleep also affects the growth of our nails, skin and hair. For those of us who aren’t able to get a good night’s sleep the symptoms often include insomnia.
You can try adding some melatonin if you have trouble falling asleep because it is more effective than caffeine and it can also keep you alert. Caffeine can be addictive and this means you don’t have to worry about waking up on time for work or school or any other appointments. If you want to avoid the effects of caffeine try decaf coffee instead and just put some lemon water with a teaspoon of honey and have a cup of it before bedtime instead of drinking coffee. Remember to make your sleep at least 7 hours but not less. Try meditating too. Meditation not only help you breathe and relax but it will also give you time to remember something better to come or improve your memory.
5. Keep track of what you eat
Track your food intake and see how much you eat each day. This will help you in the future when you need to plan your meals and when you forget where to start. There is a lot of science behind tracking the food you eat so it can help you plan better meals and manage your nutritional preferences. Most people don’t realize they really are hungry until they go through a full meal before they can take it in. Making lists and checking your grocery list can help you remember what you’re eating.
I also suggest trying to check out how much protein you have. Protein is essential to our bodies since it contains amino acids that are important in building muscle and repair tissue. It also increases testosterone levels which is very important for men because this hormone is responsible for producing sperm. Good sources of protein that can help you stay strong and active are lean red meats. Look for places like Tyson, Pizzeria del Campo, Italian beef, chicken breasts and salmon. One tip is to cut up raw vegetables into pieces and freeze them instead of chopping them up so you don’t have to overcook them and have to deal with thawing and overcooking. This way you can use leftovers or frozen vegetables to fill in gaps you won’t normally need.
6. Adds some nut and seed to your salad
Nut butters and seeds are super healthy because they contain antioxidants and nutrients and also can fight off depression and help reduce inflammation. To get a little extra protein boost you can use pumpkin seeds or walnuts. Since nuts contain the amino acid L-ascorbic acid (LAA), it can treat heartburn if used as the main ingredient in teas or capsules. Add some spinach or kale to your salad if there is some greens in it. Get some roasted almonds or pisteeds if you can’t get enough of it at home. Make sure you have a variety of nuts and seeds in your bag so that you don’t run out during busy times. Eat a piece of peanut butter or avocado on toast, make a sandwich and spread some on crackers. Or pack a few roasted sunflower seeds between two slices of bread to make some snackable treats so you have a range to choose from.
7. Get adequate amounts of fibre
A significant component in maintaining healthy digestive systems and reducing nausea is fibre. Fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products that are high in dietary fiber and soluble fibre will help you manage it while boosting digestion. Fibre is also needed in eggs and milk for gut health. Some studies have found a link between diets rich in omega 6 or 9 fatty acids and improved bowel function. Keep a bag of apples and broccoli topped with celery in the fridge for a week, cover them in yogurt and serve a slice to each person and tell me what happened next. Or if it is cold outside, simply wrap several slices of cucumber in aluminum foil and freeze them for later. You never know which foods will boost your tummy if you keep them away from heat.
8. Stay in shape
This is probably one of the most important and ignored factors when it comes to keeping fit. There is scientific proof that our physical fitness does play a huge role in our mental health too. Physical activity has been linked to increased vitality and self-esteem. It has been shown to help relieve stress and anxiety and improve mental clarity. Exercise releases endorphins that increase your mood and provide other benefits like improving your performance on your job and studying, helping you fall asleep and preventing obesity and cardiovascular disease. Being fit physically and mentally can lead to improved relationships and overall happiness. Also, it improves memory and reduces the chance of a stroke or dementia.
